The Poetry Post, located on the West Haven boardwalk, is a four-sided display of poetry, prose, photos and artwork depicting themes of nature. The public is invited to submit original work, inspired by their response to the natural environment.

Submit writings and/or images to Dolores Libow,  landtrustwesthaven.org and put “Poetry” in the subject line.

Background

The Poetry Post concept evolved from the shared thoughts of Land Trust members and poets, whose love of nature and desire to protect the earth for future generations prompted its construction. A circle of writers, including area Land Trust members, discussed how poets in some cultures hang their creative work in the market place.

The multi-sided design of The Poetry Post was prompted by consideration of Peace Poles, handcrafted monuments erected worldwide as international symbols of peace.  Their purpose is to spread the message “May peace prevail on Earth”, in different languages, one on each side. Protecting the environment is paramount in the peace movement.

The Poetry Post is also reminiscent of the old Town Post that stood on the West Haven Green. Land Trust founding member, Patricia Herbert, recalls posts utilized by West Haven and other New England municipalities to publicize important announcements.

Land Trust President, Gabe Alvandian, incorporated all these ideas into a unique design — using wood and plexi-glass — enabling individual creations to be displayed outdoors all year.

In co-operation with the City of West Haven, the Poetry Post was erected by the Land Trust of West Haven on the shoreline, across from the Bocce courts, in July 1999.

The mission of the Land Trust is to conserve open space and to help educate people about the importance of protecting our natural environment from threats of over-development. West Haven’s coastline is recognized as one of Connecticut’s crown jewels. Thousands walk along the beach drawn by the area’s natural beauty and serenity. The Land Trust, through the Poetry Post, encourages us to stop and consider the value of our natural surroundings. The posted contributions invite us to write about the feelings evoked by the great outdoors, and the healing provided through nature’s gifts. They prompt us to take action to conserve open space for the  enjoyment of all.

Over the years, people of all ages have contributed works to The Poetry Post. Local residents and out-of-towners, including elementary and secondary school children, have voiced their love and concern for our endangered world in prose and poetry, drawings, watercolors and photographs.
